Dan arrived on time,he was friendly, helpful and professional. He left our property clean and tidy.
Last week, we received a request to price up an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for a local property. Nothing unusual there we carry out dozens across Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey, Chudleigh, Teignmouth, and beyond.
What stood out this time was that we had actually carried out the last inspection five years ago, which meant we already had a detailed history of the installation. That gives us (and our customer) a strong foundation to track any changes, spot issues early, and avoid any unnecessary disruption.
So, we sent over the quote, fair and in line with what you'd expect for a thorough, compliant inspection by a qualified electrician with years of experience. The next day, we received a polite email back: “Thank you, but we’ve gone with someone else — they were half the price.”
Yes, half the price.
That naturally begs the question: Are we too expensive? We don’t think so and here’s why.
Not All EICRs Are Equal
We regularly see this situation play out. A cheaper quote rolls in, the work gets done (or appears to be done), and a few weeks later, we get a call to come take a look because either:
- The report was failed without good reason,
- The repair quote that followed was sky-high, or
- Corners were cut during testing to save time.
The truth is, not everyone carries out a full and proper inspection. Some may skip vital tests, or worse, mark things down unnecessarily so they can charge more for remedial work. We've even seen cases where repairs were quoted for but weren't required at all — just a clever way to inflate the final bill.
Landlords: Cheaper Now Can Cost You Later
We understand landlords have budgets and rising costs. But choosing a cheap EICR to save a few pounds can end up costing you a lot more both financially and legally if the work isn’t done properly. As a landlord, you have a duty of care to ensure your property is electrically safe. That means choosing contractors who are qualified, thorough, and trustworthy.
When you come to us, you know exactly what you’re getting:
- A full test, not just a quick visual once-over.
- Honest, expert advice with no scare tactics.
- Fair pricing with no hidden extras.
In Summary
If you’ve ever wondered why one EICR costs £250 and another is £125, there’s probably a good reason. And in most cases, it’s not that one contractor is twice as fast — it’s that the job isn’t being done to the same standard.
So next time you’re comparing prices, ask yourself: are you paying for a proper inspection, or just a piece of paper?
