A day off the tools, but not quite a "day off"...

A.M Electrics - Local Electrician in Newton Abbot

When most people hear “day off,” they picture putting their feet up, maybe heading out for a coffee or catching up on a bit of TV. But in the world of self-employed trades, especially when you run your own electrical business a day off the tools doesn’t mean a
day off work.

At A.M Electrics Devon Ltd, we take pride in every part of the job not just the hands-on work, but the planning and organisation that keep everything running smoothly. And that all happens behind the scenes.

Paperwork: The Unseen Part of the Job

While I might not be wiring up a new cooker circuit or installing loft lights, my “day off” is usually spent at the desk with a laptop and a cuppa. This is the time when I catch up on the admin side of things writing up quotes, sorting through invoices, chasing materials, and booking in jobs. It’s also when I check over test certificates, update our calendar, and make sure we’ve ticked every box for our safety and compliance paperwork. Not the most exciting part of the trade, but just as important as the tools in the van.

Customer Care Never Stops

Another big part of my day off is keeping in touch with our lovely customers. Whether it’s replying to emails, checking in with people who’ve had work done, or following up with new enquiries, I like to make sure everyone knows exactly what’s going on and when. We know how frustrating it can be not knowing who’s turning up or what’s happening with your job—so even when I’m not out on-site, I’m still making sure everyone is in the loop.

Planning Ahead

Finally, it’s a great chance to get ahead. I use this time to prep for the week ahead, check which jobs need parts ordered, and make sure I’ve got everything I need for upcoming projects. It means less stress during the week and helps me keep things running on time and on budget.

So, No Tools But Still Full-On

So while the toolbox might stay in the van, the work never really stops. A day off the tools is still a busy day but it’s all part of what helps A.M Electrics Devon Ltd deliver a reliable, friendly, and personal service. Because whether it’s elbow-deep in wiring or knee-deep in paperwork, we’re always working to keep your home safe, efficient, and well looked after.
