First class service once again.
When customers search for an electrician in Newton Abbot for an EV charger installation, many people naturally compare prices first. We completely understand that. EV chargers are a big investment and with so many companies advertising cheap installs online, it can be tempting to simply go with the lowest quote.
Unfortunately, this is exactly where problems can start.
At A.M Electrics Devon Ltd, we were recently contacted by a customer in Newton Abbot whose EV charger had stopped working less than six months after installation. The charger had originally been fitted by a large national company. The customer assumed it would be safe and installed correctly because it was a well-known company, however once we attended the property and carried out our inspection, we quickly found multiple issues with the installation.
EV Charger Fault Finding in Newton Abbot
The customer explained that the EV charger had started intermittently disconnecting before eventually failing completely. As with any electrical fault finding job, we started by carrying out a visual inspection before testing the installation.
Straight away we noticed signs of overheating within the enclosure feeding the EV charger.
The issue was not the charger itself. The problem was poor workmanship and loose electrical connections.
This is one of the biggest dangers when electrical work is rushed or completed by installers working to unrealistic timeframes. Connections that are not tightened correctly can create resistance, heat build-up, arcing, and eventually complete failure of the installation.
In this case, none of the connections appeared to have been torqued correctly to the manufacturer’s settings.
Why Torque Settings Matter on EV Charger Installations
One thing many customers do not realise is that EV chargers place a continuous high load on an electrical installation for long periods of time. This is very different to many other appliances within a home.
Because of this, every connection must be secure and tightened correctly to the manufacturer’s specified torque setting. This is not simply a recommendation, it is part of installing electrical equipment safely and correctly.
Loose connections can lead to:
- Poor charging performance
- Nuisance tripping
- Damaged protective devices
- Overheating cables
- Burnt terminals
- Potential fire risks
This installation could have ended much worse for the customer if the issue had continued unnoticed.
