The original doorbell at a home on Stonechat Close in Exmouth did its job: someone pressed the button, and a chime sounded inside. The homeowner wanted more from their front door, though. They chose a Ring video doorbell so they could see who was there and add an extra layer of security to their home.

Stonechat Close is on a newer estate, and the property already had a wired doorbell. That gave us a starting point for the installation, but fitting a video doorbell involves more than swapping one button for another. The existing supply had to be adapted to provide the voltage required by the customer’s Ring device, and the doorbell needed to be connected to their Wi-Fi and app.

Why the Homeowner Wanted a Ring Doorbell

A traditional doorbell lets you know that somebody is at the door, provided you are close enough to hear it. A video doorbell gives the homeowner more information. They can see who has called and use the Ring app to check the front door from their phone.
For this customer, the main reason for the change was extra security. They wanted to replace the original doorbell with something that would help them keep an eye on their entrance, including when they were elsewhere in the house or away from home.

A Ring doorbell can be a useful addition, but it needs a suitable power supply and a reliable connection to the home’s Wi-Fi to work as intended. Those details were part of the job, alongside fitting the device neatly at the front door.

Adapting the Existing Doorbell Wiring in Exmouth

The property had an existing wired doorbell push and a mains-powered chime. We removed the old push button and disconnected the chime to make way for the new setup.

The customer’s Ring doorbell required a 16–24V supply, so the existing chime arrangement could not simply be reused as it stood. We installed a suitable doorbell transformer within an enclosure at the former chime position and altered the wiring to provide the correct low-voltage supply to the new doorbell.

Using the existing doorbell wiring where suitable helped us work with the route already present at the property. The important step was checking the arrangement and adapting it for the requirements of the new device, rather than assuming that an existing wired doorbell supply would be ready to use unchanged.

Installing and Setting Up the Ring Doorbell

With the supply prepared, we securely fitted the customer-supplied Ring doorbell in the agreed position at the front entrance. We then checked the voltage reaching the device and powered it up.

The electrical installation is only one part of getting a smart doorbell ready to use. We also helped the homeowner connect it to their Wi-Fi network and Ring app, then completed the initial setup. This meant they could see how the doorbell worked before we left, rather than having a powered device on the wall that still needed setting up.

We checked communication with the app and demonstrated the basic operation to the customer. That final step matters because the benefit they wanted was the ability to use the video doorbell, not just to have it fitted.

Testing and the Finished Result

On completion, we tested the transformer supply and checked that the Ring doorbell operated and communicated with the app. We left the work area clean and tidy.

The homeowner now has a video doorbell in place of the original wired button, with a suitable supply and the app set up for use. It is a practical upgrade for someone who wants to know more about activity at their front door.
