Extension leads are a handy solution when you need extra sockets or flexibility in your home, but using them incorrectly can create serious fire and safety risks. Whether you're plugging in Christmas lights, charging the grandkids' tablets or setting up a temporary workspace, here's our no-nonsense guide to staying safe.
1. Choose the Right Extension Lead
Not all extension leads are created equal. Make sure you:
- Choose the correct length and current rating (most households should use a 13A-rated lead).
- Check it’s in good working condition with no frayed cables, cracked sockets or exposed wires.
2. Think About Placement
Extension leads should be placed carefully:
- Avoid laying them across walkways to prevent tripping hazards.
- Keep them away from moisture, radiators or direct sunlight to avoid damage or overheating.
3. Be Mindful of Load Limits
Overloading an extension lead is one of the most common causes of electrical fires:
- Check the total current rating – usually 13 amps max – and don’t plug in too many high wattage items.
- Use only one high-power appliance per lead (kettles, microwaves or heaters).
- Spread out usage if you’re using leads with multiple sockets.
4. Plug In and Out Properly
To avoid damage:
- Always insert and remove plugs securely and straight.
- Hold the plug, not the cable, when removing to prevent internal wire damage.
5. Store It Right
When not in use:
- Unplug the extension lead and coil it loosely, avoiding tight knots or sharp bends.
- Store it in a dry, cool place, especially if it’s an outdoor-rated lead.
6. Outdoor Use Needs Outdoor-Rated Leads
If you're using an extension lead outside – whether it’s for garden tools or festive lights – make sure:
- The lead is specifically designed for outdoor use.
- Sockets and plugs are protected from rain and moisture.
7. Regular Checks are Important
Just like any electrical accessory:
- Inspect extension leads regularly for signs of wear and tear.
- If you spot cracked casings, loose plugs or exposed wires, replace it straight away.
We all rely on extension leads. They’re convenient and easy, but they can quickly become dangerous if used the wrong way. Overloaded sockets, damaged cables or damp conditions are all things we come across regularly in people’s homes.
