Dan arrived on time,he was friendly, helpful and professional. He left our property clean and tidy.
I recently returned to a property in Exeter to carry out some extra electrical work, but it wasn’t the first time I’d been asked to quote there.
Two years ago, I priced up a fuse board (consumer unit) replacement. The job included making sure there was room for future circuits and ensuring everything was safe, tidy and compliant. At the time, the customer went with a cheaper quote from another electrician.
Fast forward two years, and I got a call asking if I could come back. They weren’t happy with the work that had been done and now needed additional circuits installed. The consumer unit that had been fitted only had one spare way, but they needed at least two or three extra circuits.
That left two options:
- Add a second consumer unit alongside the existing one. Not ideal for future maintenance, space or appearance.
- Replace the current unit with a larger consumer unit that had enough capacity for all the current and future circuits.
They chose to have it done properly this time with a single, modern unit with room to grow.
Think About the Long Term
When I carry out a fuse board upgrade in Exeter, I always allow for the future. Your home might not need extra circuits now, but things change. You might have a new kitchen fitted, add a garden office, install an EV charger or simply want a separate circuit for something like underfloor heating.
Planning ahead saves time and money later on — especially when it comes to passing an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report). A packed consumer unit with no spare ways can be a real headache.
Quotes Can Vary — Ask Why
We all know how busy life gets. And if you’ve got children or grandchildren, you know just how expensive things can be. So I completely understand that price matters. But when you get two or three quotes for the same job, ask yourself — why is one cheaper? Or, why is one more?
Don’t be afraid to ask those questions. A good contractor should be able to explain the difference. Are they using better quality materials? Are they allowing time for full testing and certification? Are they planning ahead for your future needs?
There’ll always be differences in cost, but it’s worth understanding exactly what you’re paying for. Cheap quotes can often mean you’ll end up paying again down the line.
If you’re in Exeter and need a consumer unit upgrade, fuse board replacement or are due an EICR, give me a call. I’ll take the time to explain your options and make sure the work is done right.
