EV Charger Installations – Exeter, Newton Abbot, Torquay & Teignmouth
Whether you've just bought an electric vehicle or are planning ahead, A.M Electrics Devon Ltd offers reliable, fully certified EV charger installations across Exeter, Newton Abbot, Torquay, Teignmouth and surrounding areas.
We work with homeowners, landlords, businesses, and Airbnb hosts — tailoring every install to suit your property, usage and budget.
From start to finish, we'll guide you through your options, explain everything clearly, and carry out the work to a high standard. No mess, no pushy sales, and no cutting corners.
How much does an EV charger cost to install?
Most home installations come in between £900 and £1,400 plus VAT. That figure is the installed price — the charger itself, the labour, the testing and the certification. It isn't a unit price with the real cost added on afterwards.
Below are the six chargers I fit most often, what makes each one different in plain English, and what you should budget for each. Have a read, work out which suits your situation, then give me a call.
Tethered or socketed — which do you actually want?
This is the first decision, and it matters more day to day than the brand does.
Tethered means the cable is permanently attached to the charger. You park, take the lead off its holder and plug in. Nothing to fetch from the boot, nothing to remember. The trade-off is that a cable lives on the front of your property, and you're fixed to the cable length you chose on the day.
Socketed means you plug your own Type 2 lead into the unit each time and take it away afterwards. The front of the house stays tidy, you can change cable length later, and the unit is usually smaller. The trade-off is fetching the lead every time.
Neither is better. It depends on whether you'd rather have convenience or a tidier wall.
The chargers I install
Ohme ePod 7.4kW — Socketed
The best compact option if you want flexibility.| Connection | Socketed / untethered |
|---|---|
| Cable | Your own Type 2 lead |
| Power | 7.4kW / 32A |
| Smart features | Ohme app, tariff integration, scheduling |
| Solar | Compatible |
The ePod is for people who want a smart home charger without a cable permanently on show. At only 230mm high it's the most discreet unit here. You plug your own Type 2 lead in when charging and take it away afterwards, so the front of the property stays tidy.
Where it really earns its place is the Ohme software. It links charging to your electricity tariff, schedules it into the cheaper periods, and balances the charging load against the rest of the house. It handles solar too. So it's not just the small one — it's a strong smart-charging choice in its own right.
I'd recommend it for: anyone who wants a compact charger, already has or is happy to use their own Type 2 lead, and wants proper tariff and app control.
Typical installed price: £900 – £1,000 + VAT Get a quote for this charger
Ohme Home Pro 7.4kW — 5m Tethered
The best everyday choice if you like a screen you can see.| Connection | Tethered Type 2 |
|---|---|
| Cable | 5m as standard |
| Power | 7.4kW / 32A |
| Controls | Colour LCD plus the Ohme app |
| Smart features | Tariffs, schedules, load balancing, solar |
This is the Ohme to pick when convenience matters more than having the smallest possible unit. The 5m cable is permanently attached, so there's no lead to fetch from the boot or the garage — park, unhook, plug in. The colour screen is genuinely useful too: you can see what's happening and use the controls at the charger rather than reaching for your phone.
Underneath it's the same Ohme platform as the ePod — tariff integration, smart schedules, home load balancing and solar. In practice it's the easiest of the lot to live with. The app does the clever bit in the background, and the screen means the charger still makes sense to someone who doesn't want to run everything from an app.
I'd recommend it for: anyone who wants the simplest day-to-day charging, a permanently attached cable, and clear information on the unit itself.

Hypervolt Home 3 Pro — Tethered
The premium option for looks, cable management and solar.| Connection | Tethered Type 2 |
|---|---|
| Cable | 5m, 7.5m or 10m options |
| Power | 7.4kW single phase |
| Controls | Hypervolt app plus illuminated status |
| Protection | IP66 / IK10, load management |
This is the one I'd show you first if you care what it looks like on the wall. The cable wraps around the body of the charger rather than needing a separate hook, and the illuminated front gives it a clean, modern look. It also comes with 5m, 7.5m or 10m leads, which is a real advantage on a larger driveway or where your car's charge port is on the awkward side.
The smart side holds up too. The app does scheduling and energy monitoring, automatic load management protects the supply into the house, and there are dedicated solar modes if you've got PV and want to make proper use of what you're generating. It isn't the cheapest here, but it's a noticeably more premium product and installation.
I'd recommend it for: anyone who wants the best-looking tethered unit, tidy cable storage, a longer lead, or strong solar functionality.
Typical installed price: £1,100 – £1,400 + VAT Get a quote for this charger
Sync Energy Wall Charger 2 — 7.5m Tethered
The one for longer driveways and awkward parking.| Connection | Tethered Type 2 |
|---|---|
| Cable | 7.5m |
| Power | Up to 7.4kW / 32A |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi and LAN |
| Smart features | App, dynamic charging, solar |
This one solves a very practical problem: reach. Most home chargers come with a 5m lead, and that gets frustrating fast if the charger can't go directly beside your car's charge port. The extra 2.5m gives you far more freedom over where you park, and stops you stretching a lead across the driveway.
You still get everything you'd expect from a modern charger — app control, schedules, dynamic charging and solar. The lead stores around the body of the unit, and there's built-in open-PEN and residual current protection. It's a sensible, practical charger rather than a style-led one.
I'd recommend it for: properties where cable reach matters more than the size of the unit — larger driveways, two-car households, or an awkward charge-port position.
Typical installed price: £1,000 – £1,200 + VAT Get a quote for this charger
Sync Energy Wall Charger 2 — Socketed
The tidiest Sync option if you don't want a cable on the wall.| Connection | Socketed / untethered |
|---|---|
| Cable | Your own Type 2 lead |
| Power | 7.4kW single phase |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi / Ethernet, 4G on some models |
| Smart features | App, schedules, solar, load management |
Same platform as the tethered version, but without a cable permanently wrapped round the wall. You use your own Type 2 lead, which keeps the charger looking clean when it isn't in use and lets you choose the cable length you want.
It keeps all the useful smart functions — app control, schedules, connected charging, solar support and dynamic load management. That makes it a good middle ground: more discreet than a tethered unit, but still properly featured rather than a basic socket on a wall.
I'd recommend it for: anyone who wants a neat socketed charger with good smart features and doesn't mind keeping their lead separately.

ICS W7C Intelligent EV Charger — Socketed
The value option, with strong connectivity and access control.| Connection | Socketed Type 2 |
|---|---|
| Power | 7.2kW / 32A |
| Display | 2.8-inch front display |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi, Ethernet, 3G/4G |
| Access | RFID, smart monitoring and scheduling |
A practical socketed charger for anyone who wants connected features and a display without paying for a design-led unit. Because it's socketed the lead comes away when you're not using it. The display gives you the useful information at the charger, and RFID access is genuinely handy on a shared driveway or anywhere you want to control who can start a charge.
Connectivity is where it's strongest — Wi-Fi, Ethernet and mobile network, plus smart monitoring, scheduled charging and OCPP support. If you value function and connectivity over appearance, this is the one.
I'd recommend it for: anyone wanting a straightforward socketed charger with a built-in display, RFID access and plenty of connectivity options at a sensible installed price.

Those are guide prices, and I'd rather explain what moves them than give you one number and change it when I turn up. The things that make a difference are:
- Cable length and route — how far the charger is from your consumer unit, and what the cable has to get past to reach it.
- Your existing consumer unit — whether there's a spare way, and whether the board itself is up to taking the extra circuit.
- The supply available — the main fuse rating and what else in the property is already drawing on it.
- Protective equipment — what's needed to meet the current Wiring Regulations for your particular installation.
- Groundworks — digging, ducting or making good if the cable has to cross a driveway or garden.
All work is carried out to the current Wiring Regulations, tested and certified. A.M Electrics is NAPIT registered, so the installation is notified properly and you get the paperwork to prove it.
